I use a Thimble-It (by Colonial Needle Company), which is a self adhesive oval of plastic that you stick on your finger. It won't protect as well as a metal or leather thimble, but it does add a layer of protection to help prevent the holes in your fingers. I don’t like thimbles either. I just wear a hole in my finger. Apparently it's been awhile since I've done any seriously hand-sewing (i.e. binding...) because my finger is currently completely whole and lacking in holes.
