…it’s as easy as pie

I keep starting posts and then not finishing them because I have to go find the laptop to upload the pictures.  I’m out of USB ports on my desktop at the moment and need to run to Fry’s to buy a USB Hub.  Blargh!

So here’s what you have to look forward to when I either a) find the laptop or b) go to Fry’s this afternoon

- the muslin for Mrs Peacock and progress on that front

- my ideas for my entries into the Austin Quilt Show

- the fashion show I was a part of on Saturday and the coolness that happened

- Annie’s first quilt (actaully, I need to borrow pics from Anjea for that one)

- and my color wheel swap dyeing from last night (and the rinse out results from today)

Sorry, guys.   I have all the drafts ready to go but I keep getting distracted.  bad!deana

I’m so pleased!

It took me two episodes of NUMB3RS, all of Finding Nemo and the first 30 minutes of the Thomas Crown Affair to stitch all of the lines on the “solvy fabric.”  I did a grid first and then loopies all over, more densely around the edges.  Here’s what it looked like when I took it off the machine:

I rinsed out the solvy in warm water in the bathtub.  I was surprised at how fast it dissolved!

It’s currently hanging to dry on the line outside.

I am beyond words to describe how excited I am about this.  I’m already planning out how to use this as an insert or an overlay in future pieces.  Mrs White may have godets in her skirt made out of various white yarns and fabrics.  It’ll also make a really good scarf or wrap for future pieces.  Overlaid over dupioni or a shimmery taffeta would be amazing.  And I’m curious to try the bottom layer as silk organza with solvy only on top to keep things from getting tangled around the hopping foot.  That wouldn’t need as much stitching, either, which might mean I could avoid the grid and just do the loopies.  Another option would be to do the grid and then stitch an overall design (Free-Motion Feathers or Leaves?) in a different color.

I’m so pleased!

My sleeping schedule is all off and I slept the entire day.  Yesterday, I made myself daily to-do lists and I had more on my plate for today than I could have handled.  But, I did get about half of it done, including…

I loaded solvy washaway stabilizer onto the longarm, pinning pretty closely.  It’s not the easiest stuff to work with.  I was afraid of tearing it, but it did fine so far.  Hopefully it will hold during stitching.

I then cut up leftover netting and fabric from Miss Scarlet and took a whole skein of Fun Fur left over from the straps and sprinkled it all over the solvy.  I hope it’s balanced and dense enough to hold up once it’s stitched.  I watched a video of this technique on QNN, but am kind of putting my own spin on it.  She used a grid stitching, but I’m going to do a loopy stitching as well, to give it some depth.  I’m using Supeior metallic in the bobbin and MasterPiece on top.

After I had everything arranged, I laid another piece of solvy on top and pinned it in place aroudn the edges.  When I first put it on, the solvy was quite loose.  It would have shifted and bunched and puckered.

I have an appointment to get an ultrasound on my spleen in an hour, but I hope to get started on the stitching when I get back.  Well, maybe after I sleep. :D

Finally in the hotel…

March18

We got in about an hour late because of fog, and tall!boy decided he didn’t want to take the cable car up the (massive) hill to the hotel. Please note that I have a BART Plus Pass which means I get unlimited rides on all Muni and most regional transport. I had an asthma attack about half-way up the hill and where is my inhaler? In Austin.

The hotel was nice enough to give us the room ahead of schedule by an hour or so and I *crashed* big time. Just woke up and tall!boy is still at work. The room is nice and the bed is super cozy.

Thought I’d share a pic from this morning. Tall!boy stayed up all night instead of going to bed at midnight and getting up again at 3:30. So by the time we were in Denver, he was exhausted. He wanted to sleep but the morning sun was in his eyes.

my sleepy husband

I also realized that I forgot to post about Miss Scarlet while I was in Dallas.  She was still entered into the show as Married in Red, Take 2 and was up against 14 competitors (including some very stiff competition).  And guess what?!

Miss Scarlet wins!

Whew…  off to eat across the street at Uncle Vito’s.  I’m in the mood for pizza.
